Leaders in Health Care When the Prince Albert Sanitarium was completed in 1930, it was the most modern facility of its kind in the world. Over the next 10 years more than 4,000 patients were treated at the sanitarium for tuberculosis, a respiratory disease. Thirty years after the Sanitarium was built, another Prince Albert building came to represent innovation in health care. In 1962, the newly founded Prince Albert Co-operative
Health Centre became the first clinic in Canada to operate under the
medicare system. While many doctors went on strike in '62 to protest
the new legislation, the clinic's founder, Dr. Orville Hjertaas, continued
to offer his services to the city. The centre is located at 110 8th
