This stunning collection of poetry by gillian harding-russell describes the magical and transitory world of the north, particularly in and around Yellowknife. It is an eloquent and personal exploration of the history, the harsh darkness, and legends of the north viewed through an imaginative lens, from the failed Franklin expeditions to the Mad Trapper. These are abundant and imaginative poems about quests, migrations, northern spirits and vanished populations.

gillian harding-russell is a Regina poet who has been visiting her daughter in Yellowknife for the past four years. She has three previous poetry collections and several chapbooks published. In 2015, the sequence “Proud Men do not Listen” from In Another Air was shortlisted for Exile’s Gwendolyn MacEwen Chapbook Award.

Come and meet gillian and enjoy readings from her newest work of poetry. Books for sale. All welcome!

Funded by The Saskatchewan Writers’Guild.

Special Guest Author Sara Leach
Sara Leach is an award-winning author of books for children. Her newest book, Penguin Days, illustrated by Rebecca Bender, is the sequel to Slug Days, which received an Honourable Mention in the Foreword INDIES Book Awards for Juvenile Fiction and was nominated for the Chocolate Lily Book Award. Her middle grade novel Count Me In has been translated into four languages, and won the Red Cedar Book Award.

Sara has been an elementary school teacher-librarian and classroom teacher for over twenty years. She is a frequent presenter at elementary schools and public libraries, both in person and through Skype. Even though Sara’s grandparents, mother and uncle were all writers, as a child she disliked writing and wanted to be an engineer. It wasn’t until she took an education course in university that she realized writing could be kind of fun (and that engineering wasn’t for her). Ten years after that she saw a bald eagle nearly eat a seal pup for lunch and was inspired to write her first book for children. Sara lives in Whistler, BC, where she works as a teacher-librarian. She enjoys skiing, hiking and biking in the local mountains with her two teenaged children and husband.

Students in grades five to seven are invited to attend this special author presentation by Sara Leach. Registration is limited to eighty students and their teachers. Public is welcome to drop in. Space is limited.
